We have been in the South Okanagan of British Columbia for almost a month now, and have fallen in love with the small city of Penticton for its gorgeous beaches, cute town center, friendly people, and most importantly... the endless choice of Pub patios to enjoy delicious food and cold beer on. On a particularly hot day, we did a little research and after looking at the Kettle Valley Station Pubs website decided we had to give it a try.
One look at this adorable & serene patio - we knew we had made a good choice. Obviously - the first thing we did was open the drink menu... and to my delight they offered Okanagan Spring Craft Beer in 1516 which is my hands down favorite beer in the world. The weather was hot, the patio was peaceful and the beer was cold & delicious... I was a happy girl.
The menu didn't offer a ton of vegan options (which has been a bit of a general challenge for me in the South Okanagan) but it had a tofu burger that I found very intriguing. Not a veggie burger - or a soy patty burger... a TOFU burger. Am I the only one who has never seen this before? I love burgers and I love tofu... so naturally I had to give it a try.
I ordered the burger without dairy (cheese & mayo) and it was cooked with blackening seasoning and served on a thin bun with red onion, tomato & lettuce. I also added sauteed mushrooms (because I am SMART haha). They offered several side options and I was totally feeling the chips and salsa... and it was perfect. The burger was very different from any veggie burger that I have had before and I absoloutly LOVED it. The seasoning was spot on and it went really well with the thin crust bun. The mushrooms were a great compliment that I would highly recommend. I do personally prefer my tofu to be a bit crispy so if this tofu patty was either flash fried in a pan and/or deep fried it would have taken this dish to another level... but all in all it was a really unique and very tasty burger. I would definitly recommend to you travellers in the area - even if just for a cold one in a really cute atmosphere.
